Cannabidiol has been gaining popularity among those people who are into natural medicine because of its many medical benefits. It is useful for treating chronic pain, giving good sleep, good appetite, for reducing stress and anxiety. There is much evidence for its effectiveness in the treatment of cancer and researches are conducted to find how it works at a molecular level to mitigate cancer. While some of the initial studies are positive, they are not conclusive. Through this we will try to find how CBD is useful in Cancer treatment.
Use Of CBD As Complementary Therapy
As of now the use of CBD is as a complementary therapy that helps to mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy and other cancer treatment procedures. This is due to the therapeutic and medical benefits of cannabidiol without having psychotropic effects. Some of these benefits are the following.
Pain Relief: Both cancer and its treatment can result in immense pain that can be crippling and numbing at times. This is usually due to inflammations or nerve damage and at times can resist opioid painkillers. CBD is useful as it acts on the CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system and reduces pain by reducing inflammation.
Stimulate Appetite: It is common for those undergoing chemotherapy to suffer from nausea and loss of appetite. Because of its effect on the serotonin levels, which is a neurotransmitter responsible for homeostasis; it stimulates a good appetite. Hence, it helps to improve overall health and well being due to improved dietary intake of nutrients.
Manage Nausea: As mentioned previously nausea and vomiting are the side effects of cancer treatment and CBD is useful in reducing these symptoms. Besides, consuming it calms down which helps the patients to manage these symptoms better.
CBD Cancer Prevention
The high amounts of antioxidants present in CBD oil helps to negate or reduce oxidative stress due to free radicals because they are one of the triggers of cancer. Besides, using it enhances the immune system which is important in preventing cancer.
Can CBD Cancer?
Studies have shown that CBD acts as an antagonist for GPR55 receptors whose activation causes cancer cell proliferation. It is known to activate PAAR’s, the activation of these receptors causes tumour regression and it also prevents or stops the expression of the gene responsible for cancer. These are the positive aspects, but there have not been large-scale clinical trials to investigate its effectiveness in cancer treatment.
More scientific research are being conducted to confirm the use of pure CBD in cancer treatment.
